Roughcast Rendering
Wigan & North West

Traditional roughcast render that protects your home from North West weather. Applied by specialist rendering contractors with over 45 years of experience across the North West.

What Is Roughcast Render?

Roughcast render - sometimes called wet dash or harling - is a traditional external wall finish that has been used on British homes for well over a century. It consists of a sand and cement base coat topped with a finish coat containing aggregate, which gives it its distinctive textured appearance.

The rough, pebbled surface is not merely decorative. It's highly functional: the texture breaks up rainwater, preventing it from sheeting down the wall and penetrating the substrate. This makes roughcast particularly well-suited to the wet, windswept climate of North West England, where driving rain is a regular feature of autumn and winter.

At FX Render Systems, we apply roughcast render to a high standard using quality materials and time-tested techniques. Every job is prepared properly, applied carefully, and finished neatly - because the longevity of the system depends on the quality of the application.

Benefits of Roughcast Rendering in Manchester

Exceptional Weather Resistance

The textured aggregate surface of roughcast render is specifically designed to shed water quickly and resist the driving rain that's common across North West England. It's been protecting British homes for generations.

Proven Durability

When applied correctly, roughcast render is one of the most long-lasting external finishes available. A properly installed system can protect your walls for 20–30 years with minimal maintenance.

Covers Imperfections

Roughcast is particularly effective at concealing uneven brickwork, patched repairs, or ageing stonework - delivering a uniform, consistent finish across the whole elevation.

Cost-Effective Finish

Compared to some premium render systems, roughcast offers excellent value for money without compromising on protection. It's a practical, hardwearing choice for budget-conscious homeowners.

Traditional North West Aesthetic

Roughcast render has a long history in the North West of England. It suits the character of the region's housing stock and is widely accepted by local planning authorities.

Low Ongoing Maintenance

Once applied and cured, roughcast render requires very little upkeep. An occasional clean and periodic inspection is all that's needed to keep it performing well.

How We Apply Roughcast Render

A quality roughcast render job starts well before the first coat goes on. Preparation is everything - and it's where many contractors cut corners.

01
Step 01

Survey & Preparation

We inspect the existing substrate, identify any areas of loose or damaged masonry, and assess the condition of existing render if present. Any defects are made good before work begins.

02
Step 02

Masonry Preparation

The wall surface is cleaned, any loose material is removed, and the substrate is treated to ensure proper adhesion. Window and door reveals are protected with masking and dust sheets.

03
Step 03

Scratch Coat Application

A base scratch coat is applied to the wall and combed to create a key for the finish coat. This layer is left to cure fully before the next stage.

04
Step 04

Roughcast Finish Application

The roughcast mix - comprising sand, cement, and aggregate - is applied and worked to achieve the characteristic textured finish. Colour can be added at this stage if required.

05
Step 05

Detailing & Finishing

Reveals, sills, and edges are carefully finished. Any protective masking is removed and the surrounding area is thoroughly cleaned.

06
Step 06

Curing & Handover

The render is left to cure properly. We carry out a final inspection with you before handover, and your 10-year workmanship guarantee is issued.

10-Year
Workmanship Guarantee

Every roughcast rendering job we complete is backed by a 10-year workmanship guarantee. We're fully insured with public liability and employer's liability cover, and certificates are available on request. We stand behind our work - long after the scaffolding comes down.

Roughcast Render Questions Answered

Common questions about roughcast rendering. Call us on 07907 087624 if you have a question we haven't answered here.

Traditional roughcast render is a mix of sand, cement, and aggregate (typically small stones or gravel). The aggregate is either mixed into the render or thrown onto the surface while wet, creating the characteristic textured finish.
Yes - the textured surface of roughcast render is very effective at shedding water. The aggregate surface breaks up rainfall and directs it away from the wall face, making it particularly well-suited to the wet North West climate.
Yes, roughcast render can be painted with a suitable masonry paint. However, many homeowners prefer to leave it unpainted, as the natural aggregate colour weathers well. If you do paint it, you'll need to repaint periodically as the paint fades.
Small cracks can be filled with a flexible exterior filler and painted over. Larger areas of failure usually require the old render to be cut back and the area re-rendered. We can assess the extent of any damage during a free survey.
Roughcast is most commonly associated with traditional and period properties, but it can be used on any property where a textured, durable finish is required. For a more contemporary look, thin coat or monocouche render may be more appropriate.
Well-applied roughcast render on a properly prepared substrate can last 20–40 years. The longevity depends on the quality of the original application, the condition of the substrate, and the exposure of the property to weather.
