Thin Coat Rendering
Wigan & North West

A smooth, fine-textured polymer render that gives your home a clean, contemporary finish. Flexible, breathable, and available in a wide range of colours - with no painting required.

What Is Thin Coat Render?

Thin coat render - also referred to as silicone render or polymer render - is a modern external wall finishing system applied at just 1.5–3mm thickness. Unlike traditional sand-and-cement renders, it uses polymer-modified materials that offer superior flexibility, breathability, and colour retention.

The system is typically applied over a reinforced base coat embedded with fibreglass mesh, which provides the structural integrity and crack resistance of the finished wall. The thin coat finish itself is then applied in a single pass to achieve a consistent, fine-textured appearance.

Thin coat render is particularly popular for properties where the owner wants a clean, contemporary look - moving away from the traditional roughcast or pebbledash finish that's common on older North West housing stock. The colour is integral to the render, so there's no need for painting and no risk of peeling.

Benefits of Thin Coat Rendering in Manchester

Contemporary, Smooth Finish

Thin coat render delivers a clean, fine-textured finish that gives older properties a completely modern appearance. It's ideal for homeowners who want a significant visual upgrade.

Excellent Weather Protection

Applied over a reinforced base coat, thin coat render creates a flexible, breathable membrane that resists water ingress whilst allowing moisture vapour to escape from the wall.

Wide Colour Range

Available in a broad range of colours, thin coat render allows you to choose a finish that suits your home and the surrounding streetscape - without the need for painting.

Flexible & Crack-Resistant

The polymer-modified formulation gives thin coat render a degree of flexibility that traditional sand-and-cement renders lack, making it more resistant to hairline cracking over time.

Breathable System

Thin coat render is vapour-permeable, which means moisture within the wall can escape naturally. This is particularly important for older solid-wall properties common across the North West.

Long-Lasting Colour

The colour is integral to the render rather than applied as a paint coat, so it won't peel or flake. The finish retains its appearance for many years with minimal upkeep.

How We Apply Thin Coat Render

Thin coat render is only as good as the preparation and base coat beneath it. We follow a rigorous process to ensure the finished system performs as it should.

01
Step 01

Survey & Assessment

We inspect the wall substrate and assess the condition of any existing render or masonry. We discuss your preferred finish and colour options at this stage.

02
Step 02

Surface Preparation

The wall is cleaned and any loose, damaged, or contaminated material is removed. Cracks and voids are filled and the surface is primed to ensure good adhesion.

03
Step 03

Mesh & Base Coat

A fibreglass reinforcement mesh is embedded into a polymer-modified base coat. This reinforcement layer is critical - it provides the flexibility and crack resistance of the finished system.

04
Step 04

Primer Application

Once the base coat has cured, a primer coat is applied to regulate suction and ensure even absorption of the thin coat finish. Colour-matched primers are used where required.

05
Step 05

Thin Coat Finish

The thin coat render is applied at 1.5–3mm thickness and worked to achieve a consistent texture. The aggregate size determines the final texture - from fine to medium.

06
Step 06

Finishing & Handover

Edges, reveals, and details are carefully finished. The area is cleaned and a final inspection is carried out before we issue your 10-year workmanship guarantee.

10-Year
Workmanship Guarantee

Every thin coat rendering job we complete is backed by a 10-year workmanship guarantee. We're fully insured with public liability and employer's liability cover. We take pride in our work and stand behind it long after the job is done.

Thin Coat Render Questions Answered

Common questions about thin coat rendering. Call us on 07907 087624 if you'd like to discuss your specific requirements.

Thin coat render (also called thin coat polymer render or silicone render) is a fine-textured render applied at just 1.5–3mm thickness. It's a modern, flexible system typically applied over an insulation base coat or directly onto a prepared substrate.
Quality thin coat render systems can last 20–25 years with minimal maintenance. Silicone-based systems are particularly durable, as silicone is inherently water-repellent and UV-resistant.
Yes - modern thin coat render systems are designed to be vapour-permeable, meaning they allow moisture vapour to escape from within the wall while preventing liquid water from penetrating from outside. This is particularly important for older properties.
Monocouche render is applied at 15–20mm in a single coat and has a more textured finish. Thin coat render is applied at 1.5–3mm over a base coat and produces a finer, smoother finish. Thin coat is more commonly used on modern properties and EWI systems; monocouche is more common on traditional properties.
Yes - thin coat render is available in a very wide range of colours, including custom colours. The colour is integral to the render, so there's no painting required. We'll show you colour samples during your survey.
In most cases, yes. Thin coat render is typically applied over a polymer base coat reinforced with fibreglass mesh. This provides the structural layer, with the thin coat providing the decorative, weatherproof finish. On some substrates, a primer alone may be sufficient.
